Green River Basin

Observed runoff was above to much above average over the entire Green River basin for April-July 1995. Many areas experienced individual monthly flows in both June and July that were greater than the entire April-July seasonal flow last year.

Monthly precipitation in the Green River Basin was near to below average from December 1994 through February. March through July monthly precipitation was above to much above average. Precipitation in May was an exceptional 300 percent of average. The snowpack began below average, reached near average by February 1, and was above average by May 1. By June 1, the upper elevation snow was much above average due to a cool, wet May.

Generally, forecasts underestimated observed flows, particularly early in the season. Monthly forecasts increased from first issuance in January to the last in June reflecting the monthly above normal precipitation during May and June created a non-typical runoff scenario producing flows greater than expected. Many observed flows were near or above the 10 percent exceedance value forecasts.
