Green River Basin
Observed runoff was near to much above normal over the entire
Green River Basin for the April through July 1997 season.
Monthly precipitation in the Green River Basin was much above
normal in December 1996 with the seasonal precipitation, October
through December 1996, above to much above normal. This trend
continued into January 1997. However, both February and March
of 1997 were well below normal. April returned to the pattern
of early winter coming in well above normal. Seasonal precipitation
at the end of April was well above normal.
The seasonal snowpack already averaged 180 percent of normal for
the Green River Basin by the 1st of January. The
only period through May when the snowpack in this area wasn't
much above normal was during late March/early April.
Streamflow forecasts were generally highest in February, just before
the months of below normal precipitation, then dropped a bit in the
March through May forecasts. Above normal precipitation in June and
July contributed to some forecasts coming in a bit below observed
flows.
